Nothing shines a spotlight on Maine’s child-endangerment law like a 2-year-old boy who shoots both of his sleeping parents with a loaded weapon.
It happened in West Bath on the morning of May 12.
According to police, the 9 mm semiautomatic handgun was sitting on a night table when the toddler picked it up and pulled the trigger. The single shot hit the boy’s mother in the leg, and two bullet fragments hit the father in the back of the head. The little boy was injured as well when the gun recoiled and struck him in the face. ....

WEST BATH, Maine The father of a two-year-old boy was arrested on child endangerment charges Monday following a May 12 incident where the boy allegedly picked up an unsecured handgun and fired it, injuring himself and his parents.
Around 2:30 p.m Monday, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ian Carr, 25, of West Bath at the county courthouse when he turned himself in. ....

Deputies have filed charges in connection with an incident last week where a 2-year old boy accidentally shot his parents with a gun left on a nightstand.
The child’s father, Ian Carr, 25, of West Bath, was charged Monday with endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.Sign up for our Newsletters
“The seriousness of this incident must be underscored. This situation could easily have been fatal. The carelessness is astounding. However, current law only allows for a misdemeanor offense to be charged. Every owner of any firearm must be responsible for the safekeeping of their weapons when children are present in the home, particularly inquisitive, young children,” Sheriff Joel Merry said in a statement. ....
