BHUBANESWAR: With Cyclone Yaas inching closer to the Odisha coast, the state government on Monday deployed senior IAS and IPS officers as well as engineers and officers from different departments in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Mayurbhanj districts to supervise the rescue and restoration activities. Adequate numbers of doctors, too, have been sent to Balasore and Bhadrak where the cyclone is likely to cause the maximum damage.
Sports secretary Vishal Dev and inspector general of police (eastern range), Diptesh Pattanayak, have been assigned the task of overseeing the operations in Balasore. Food supplies secretary V V Yadav and inspector general of police (crime branch), Amitendra Nath Sinha, would look after Bhadrak. Cyclone Yaas: Anticipating landfall in Balasore, Odisha rushes rescue teams


The Odisha government rushed a large contingent of rescue and relief teams to Balasore district bordering West Bengal on Monday where the very severe cyclonic storm Yaas in likely to make landfall.
Considering the input given by the weather office, the state government is preparing for possible landfall of the cyclone in Odisha, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena told reporters.
A massive evacuation drive will be launched in all low-lying areas and vulnerable storm-surge pockets, following the IMD predicting a tidal surge of 2-4.5 meters during the landfall of Yaas, Jena said.
The process of evacuation has already begun in the state and would be completed by Tuesday afternoon. The government is determined to ensure zero casualty in the cyclone, he said. ....

Odisha: Summer vacation for higher education institutes starts today | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government on Tuesday announced summer holidays for higher education institutions from May 5. Higher education department secretary Saswat Mishra, in a letter to all the vice-chancellors of state public universities and principals of all government and non-government degree colleges, informed that the vacation will last till May 31.
The government has allowed conducting interviews for PhD courses and other research scholars on scheduled dates during the vacation. However, online classes and exams shall not be held during this period, the notification stated.
Teachers, meanwhile, questioned the delay in announcing summer vacation for schools. Teachers in government schools are still going to school on roster duty and for admission while those in private schools have been taking online classes. ....

BHUBANESWAR: Detection of Covid cases in educational institutions has created a challenge for the state government. If the cases increase, the pandemic will disrupt planned syllabi and exam schedule.
The BJB Autonomous College here on Monday issued a notice regarding the detection of a Covid case on campus. A student from the commerce stream of the junior college tested positive on Saturday. The college has advised students who have come in contact with the infected person to isolate themselves for at least seven days and go for RT-PCR test. ....
