Michèle Audette, commissioner of MMIWG inquiry, among five named to Senate

OTTAWA â MichÃ¨le Audette, one of the commissioners for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, is among the five newest members of the Senate.
Audette was named as a senator for Quebec as part of a raft of appointments made public by the Prime Ministerâs Office.
Audette was one of the five commissioners responsible for the inquiry, which delivered a final report to the federal government in June 2019 that included 231 calls for justice.
Prior to that, she had been president of the Native Womenâs Association of Canada, and in 2015 unsuccessfully ran for the federal Liberals in the Quebec riding of Terrebonne. ....

The appointment to the Senate of Canada for Arnot, also a former federal treaty commissioner for the province, was announced Thursday by the Prime Minister’s Office.

“This is a great honour and I am truly humbled,” Arnot said in a statement.
“The Prime Minister was clear when he spoke to me that he expects me to make a significant contribution to the work of the Senate, and to help tackle the broad range of challenges and opportunities facing our country.”
Arnot has been in the role of chief commissioner since 2009, after starting his legal career in Saskatchewan in 1976. ....

The chief commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission has been named one of five new independent senators.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced David Arnot has been appointed as senator Thursday.
“This is a great honour and I am truly humbled,” Arnot said in a news release from the Human Rights Commission.
“The Prime Minister was clear when he spoke to me that he expects me to make a significant contribution to the work of the Senate, and to help tackle the broad range of challenges and opportunities facing our country. He also underlined the fact that I will be able to contribute to the work of the Senate in an independent and non-partisan fashion to ensure integrity and collaboration in service to Parliament and all Canadians.” ....
