Coastal News Today | World - Say Hello to the Arctic Kelp Rush

In August 2019, an Arctic research vessel, the MV William Kennedy, anchored off the shore of Southampton Island, at the north end of Canada’s Hudson Bay. A group of researchers set off in a Zodiac, across waters that 30 years ago would have been covered with ice, even at this time of the year. Now there was only open water, revealing a seabed that had never before been mapped. Southampton Island was bare of any vegetation scoured flat by ice. But beneath the waves was vibrant with color. Tangles of Saccharina latissima, or sugar kelp, floated in dense, five-meter canopies, olive green against the Arctic blue. Another algae,

Hidden forests in Arctic oceans - Arctic Journal

Arctic Journal  The next economic opportunity? Luxuriant Arctic forests  In cold marine waters, rocky reefs are often dominated by habitat-forming seaweeds such as kelp. These seaweeds form impressive underwater forests that are not only a phenomenal source of primary productivity and food, but also create three- dimensional structure that provides valuable habitat for many animals and other seaweeds, including harvested species. The recipe for kelp forests in many regions of the world is deceptively simple: a rocky seafloor, enough light to support growth, cool nutrient-rich waters, and low grazing pressure to ensure survival. Add protection from ice scour to this mix and you have the formula for predicting the potential distribution of kelp in Arctic regions.

Daylight Saving Time doesn t work and was invented by our enemies: Why to hate this wretched practice

Article content We are now one day into the wretched, wretched exercise known as Daylight Saving Time. Twice a year, our governments demand that we alter our clocks in the service of a practice that almost certainly serves no useful purpose while simultaneously imposing a myriad of measurable harms. Daylight Saving Time is the ultimate example of a harmful government program that persists only because of apathetic inertia. Below is a re-post of an article published in 2016. Since it first went online, only the Yukon has heard our call and successfully consigned Daylight Saving Time to the dustbin of history; in March, 2020 the territory skipped ahead and has never skipped back. Meanwhile, efforts in B.C. and Alberta are stuck in limbo.
