Ontario Sires Stakes excitement arrives at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday (July 11) in the shape of 39 three-year-old trotting colts and geldings and, for the first time this season, fans will be on hand to cheer them home. Trotting colts will square off in two $99,800 Gold divisions and a trio of $22,150 Grassroots Series divisions. In the Gold Series contests, two of the competitors will carry the hopes of local owners. Royal Tyrone starts from post 5 in the first split for Ottawa resident R. William MacQuarrie’s 1187422 Ontario Inc., and Tokyo Seelster gets post 4 in the second division for Braveheart Racing principals Frank Spagnolo of Ottawa and Kenneth Donald of Nepean and their partners Michael and Sam Sergi of Canton, N.Y. ....
Two-year-old pacing colts were featured at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday, July 9, competing in five $22,500 Grassroots divisions, and Bob Loblaw kicked things off in the first race with a 1:54.2 score. Starting from Post 7 with Sylvain Filion in the race bike, Bob Loblaw hustled away from the starting gate and led the field of 10 to a :28.3 quarter. Silk Road Smash swept to the front heading for the :58 half and carried on to a 1:27.1 three-quarters with Bob Loblaw on his heels. Coming off the final turn Filion tipped Bob Loblaw out from behind the pacesetter and the gelding responded with a :27 last quarter that saw him hit the wire three and one-quarter lengths ahead of co-favourites Up The Creek and Silk Road Smash. ....
Trainer Mandy Archer had a productive Thursday at Rideau Carleton Raceway thanks to a four-win performance on the 11-race card. Archer teamed up with Guy Gagnon to take the opener with Malvolio in 2:00. They also joined forces to capture Race 4 with Thinkingofyoubabe in 1:58.2. Gagnon then went down the road in Race 5 with the Archer-trained The Twist in 1:59.4. Samuel Fillion piloted Archer’s final winner on the card – Wisk Key K in 1:57 in Race 7. Archer has assembled a solid record of 28-22-17 from the 123 starters she’s sent out this year. Those numbers have earned her a .373 UTR and earnings in excess of $135,000. ....
