Fri May 14 2021 | Kenny DeJohn | College PHOTO COURTESY OF STONY BROOK ATHLETICS Stony Brook topped Towson 14-8 in the first NCAA Division I women s lacrosse tournament game. Rayna Sabella’s newfound role on the defensive end of the ball was one she was admittedly scared to carve out. When Haley Dillon went down with an injury in February, Stony Brook needed someone who could step up on defense. Sabella, a midfielder by trade, slid into a defense-first role on a full-time basis. Joe Spallina’s squad has reaped the benefits of her transition. Sabella, who scored 19 goals in 2019, is instead happy to prevent others from scoring. She had two ground balls and two caused turnovers in eighth-seeded Stony Brook’s 14-8 win over Towson in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday afternoon, limiting a Towson offense that was also missing top scorer Blair Pearre to just 18 shots (six in the first half). ....
Thursday May 13th, 2021 10:00am (Photo Courtesy: Dave Anderson) We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness. Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend. ....

Thu Apr 15 2021 | Kenny DeJohn | College PHOTO COURTESY OF BC ATHLETICS Freshman Belle Smith led all players with six points (four goals) as BC earned a statement win. If you came into Thursday evening’s ACC bout between No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 5 Boston College to be a back-and-forth affair befitting the nature of a typical top-five matchup, then the final result was certainly surprising. Boston College began the game on a blistering six-goal run and scored nine of the first 11 tallies, cruising to a 19-11 win in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Freshman Belle Smith led Boston College with six points (four goals, two assists), and Charlotte North recorded four goals, one assist and 11 draw controls. Rachel Hall made 11 saves. ....
