Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians' Gold Awards uplift upper East Tennessee | Family


The Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians have announced the 2021 Gold Award recipients in upper East Tennessee. Seven of the 29 recipients are from the Tri-Cities.
Since 1916, thousands of Girl Scouts across the country have earned the Girl Scouts’ highest honor, now called the Girl Scout Gold Award, for demonstrating extraordinary leadership and making sustainable change in their communities. Nationally, only 6 percent of all eligible Girl Scouts achieve the Gold Award.
“Our communities have been positively impacted by the vision, leadership and dedication of each of our Gold Award girls,” said Lynne Fugate, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians. “This high honor required hours of hard work and the leadership skills that they have been developing during their years as a Girl Scout.” ....

ETSU seeking participants for Upward Bound program


Bryan Bernard, a senior at Sullivan South High School, was initially on the fence about joining the Upward Bound program at East Tennessee State University.
But it ended up being one of the best decisions he’s ever made, allowing him to be himself around people who grew up in similar conditions.
“One of the biggest benefits for me would be the people and the community,” Bernard said. “I was really able to branch out and find people that I connected with and was able to gain support from them in school and anything else really.”
With recruitment difficult because of the COVID-19 pandemic, East Tennessee State University is seeking applications in ninth and 10th grades for its Upward Bound program, which aims to help high schoolers from low-income backgrounds, first-generation college students and students with disabilities attend and graduate from college. Activities are offered at no cost. ....

South renaming, rebranding to middle school survey closes noon Friday


The deadline to participate in the online survey is noon Friday.
The options are Sullivan Heights Middle School, Sullivan West Middle School and West Valley Middle School. The survey can be accessed through the school system’s website, www.sullivank12.net.
Sullivan County Commissioner Angie Stanley, a graduate of South, recently spoke in public comment to the Board of Education urging it to consider South Middle School as a name.
However, Director of Education David Cox on Monday said the survey choices were generated by a committee of students, teachers and parents from the schools merging into or feeding into the new middle school. ....

South Rebels may be no more at school year's end


BLOUNTVILLE — The days of Sullivan South Rebels may be coming to an end, much to the chagrin of a graduate of Sullivan South High School who serves on the Sullivan County Commission.
Among the three options in an online survey about naming the middle school to be located on the current Sullivan South High School campus, Sullivan South Middle School is not an option.
The options are Sullivan Heights Middle School, Sullivan West Middle School and West Valley Middle School. The survey can be accessed through the school system’s website, www.sullivank12.net.
And that just doesn’t sit well with County Commissioner Angie Stanley, who Thursday night told the Board of Education at its meeting that she was asked by parents, alumni and constituents to urge the board to consider Sullivan South Middle as the new school name. ....
