May Day began in the U.S. in 1884 after labor federations called for worker strikes and protests for the eight-hour day. 400,000 workers answered the call countrywide on May 1, 1886. That year eight worker organizers, some immigrants, were arrested and framed for the May 4 bombing of a Haymarket Square rally in Chicago. Five were sentenced to death; four were executed and a fifth died in his cell. An 1889 international socialist conference declared May 1 International Workers Day, in part to honor the Haymarket Martyrs. The day was revitalized in the U.S. in 2005 by the Black-led Million Worker March, and in 2006 by the Latinx immigrant workers’ mass strike. In 2021 the day was commemorated around the world; Workers World Party helped organize a number of actions across the U.S. ....

May Day Ralliers Reflect on Working Class Struggles


On Saturday hundreds of people, representing different unions, organizations, and labor campaigns, gathered at Union Square to celebrate May Day and later marched on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’s Midtown mansion.
May 1st, also known as  International Workers Day, is an official holiday in much of the world outside the United States. The holiday’s origins date back to the May 1886 Haymarket Massacre in Chicago that saw police violently suppress the movement for an eight-hour work day. May Day virtually disappeared from the United States during the Cold War but was revived by the immigrant rights movement in 2006 and has been widely celebrated in the U.S. ever since ....

West African hair braiding salons in Harlem were a one-stop shop for advice between hair braiders and clients before the pandemic hit. But like many businesses throughout New York City that closed, the hair braiding profession, which is largely staffed by West African women, has found it difficult to recover even though workers have been allowed to return to work. Mariam, from Gambia, had been braiding hair full-time in Harlem for 23 years until Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered the closure of personal care salons last March. She then got a job in maintenance with the New York City Housing Authority, where she realized she had far more benefits and stability than when she braided hair. ....
