The CDC reports that anxiety and depression due to the pandemic have gone up at least 5%.
Things like getting together with friends at the carnival was non-existent last year and for some first-time carnival attendees like Victoria Smith, last year s quarantine was difficult because she was pregnant, so seeing her daughter make new friends at the carnival is giving her a sense of normalcy. ....

What the Pandemic Is Doing to Our Brains

The Atlantic
We have been doing this so long, we’re forgetting how to be normal.
Peter Marlow / Magnum
I first became aware that I was losing my mind in late December. It was a Friday night, the start of my 40-somethingth pandemic weekend: Hours and hours with no work to distract me, and outside temperatures prohibitive of anything other than staying in. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to fill the time. “What did I used to … do on weekends?” I asked my boyfriend, like a soap-opera amnesiac. He couldn’t really remember either. ....

ONE YEAR OF COVID-19 | 'Mistakes were made, lessons were learnt': Zweli Mkhize

Mkhize recalled how plans were put into motion to tackle the coronavirus after the first cases were detected in KwaZulu-Natal.
He said what was most heartening for him was when nurses at Greys Hospital, during his visit there a year ago, started singing that they did not fear Covid-19 and were ready to tackle the coronavirus.
“That was the beginning of the hope we all shared.
“The real crunch time came when we saw every day that the numbers were doubling. I recall several meetings with experts and professors to discuss this issue. It became clear the numbers and the way they were rising they would overwhelm the health system. Then came the expression of ‘flattening the curve’.” ....
