Police in the Netherlands have arrested two health ministry workers for allegedly stealing COVID-19 patient data from the agency’s systems and offering it for sale online.
The arrest on Jan. 23 of the two Dutch Municipal Health Service, or GGD Amsterdam, workers comes on the heels of a December cyberattack on the Netherlands-based RTL Nieuws, last week found personal data from the GGD systems offered for sale on chat services, including Telegram, Snapchat and Wickr. ....

Intel Investigating Hack of Confidential Financial Report

Intel is investigating an incident in which an unauthorized person accessed a portion of the company s latest quarterly financial report, forcing the chipmaker to release its earnings slightly earlier than planned.
Intel s Chief Financial Officer George Davis told The Financial Times that an attacker accessed the report by hacking into the company s corporate website.
We are investigating reports that non-authorized access may have been obtained to one graphic in our earnings material. OpenWRT Project Community Investigating Data Breach

OpenWRT, an open-source project that develops operating systems, firmware and other software for connected and embedded devices, is investigating a data breach after a hacker gained access to an administrator account over the weekend, according to posts on the project s message boards.
In a post, the OpenWRT administrators note the exact cause of the breach, which was discovered Saturday, is still being investigated.
It is not known how the account was accessed: The account had a good password but did not have two-factor authentication enabled, according to the message board post.
The initial investigation showed that the hacker was able to download a community user list that contained email addresses, user handles and some statistical information about the community s users, according to the post. ....

Reserve Bank of New Zealand Gov. Adrian Orr says he personally owns responsibility for a serious data breach involving a file transfer system.
The governor of New Zealand’s Reserve Bank, the nation s central bank, says he “personally owns” responsibility for a data breach that exposed private and sensitive stakeholder information.
On Friday, Gov. Adrian Orr said that the bank’s actions “have fallen short of the public’s expectations. This is why I am unreservedly apologizing,” according to a video included as part of a statement.
The bank disclosed on Jan. 10 that hackers had compromised the bank’s File Transfer Appliance, which is part of the file-sharing service from Accellion, a company based in Palo Alto, California. The central bank used the service to share information with stakeholders (see: ....

Excellus Health Plan Hit with $5.1 Million HIPAA Settlement

The Department of Health and Human Services has slapped insurer Excellus Health Plan with a $5.1 million settlement in the wake of a 2015 breach that affected more than 9.3 million individuals.
Excellus, which serves upstate and western New York, in September 2015 filed a breach report stating that intruders had gained unauthorized access to its information systems, HHS’ Office for Civil Rights says in a statement Friday.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield health plan reported that the breach began on or before Dec. 23, 2013, and ended on May 11, 2015.
”The hackers installed malware and conducted reconnaissance activities that ultimately resulted in the impermissible disclosure of the protected health information of more than 9.3 million individuals, including their names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, Social Security numbers, bank account information, health plan claims, and clinical treatment information,” OCR says. ....
