Kurdish journalist hits out after unlawful detention in Turkey

KURDISH journalist Beritan Canozer has hit out after saying she was “unlawfully detained” for four days in Turkey last week after covering a demonstration held last November opposing violence against women.
She spoke to the Morning Star after she was released on a judicial control order last Friday, after she was accused of being a member of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Ms Canozer was detained in the largely Kurdish city of Diyarbakir along with 21 other women, including those from the Rosa Women’s Association, which was also targeted by security services last year.
She was charged for covering a press statement made by Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Pervin Buldan for Jin TV on November 25, which is International Day Against Violence Against Women. ....

1. IPPF’s COVID-19 response
COVID-19 has upended life as we all knew it. The impact on public health has been cataclysmic, and we have the utmost gratitude and admiration for our Member Associations who stopped at nothing to carry on delivering vital sexual and reproductive healthcare during this unprecedented year.
We are in awe of every worker and every volunteer who was able to continue doing their very best to provide vital sexual and reproductive healthcare, even at risk to themselves. They are truly heroes, and we are forever grateful for their dedication and commitment. ....

At a closing event of the UN 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence (GBV) campaign in Sudan this Thursday, Dr Asma Abakar, director of the El Kandaka humanitarian aid organisation, called for ‘‘solidarity’’ and ‘‘cohesion’’ in the struggle against gender-based violence in Kadugli, capital of South Kordofan.
She advocated for women to participate in national issues and political procedures, as stipulated in the Constitutional Document, and benefit from their involvement.
Abakar explained that the event aimed to encourage the proposing and exchanging of ideas, as well as overcoming differences in views and opinions, among the women of South Kordofan. ....

Fulfilling the right to legal identification: Support from USAID helps Kyrgyzstanis obtain access to important public services
AKIPRESS.COM - USAID’s Jigerduu Jarandar project presented the results of its ongoing efforts to improve Kyrgyzstanis’ access to legal aid and civic documentation. During the event dedicated to the International Human Rights Day, the project highlighted the best practices in providing legal assistance to people in target areas. Participants of the conference that took place in Osh also discussed the overall situation with human rights with a focus on the right to identity.
To improve legal services and ensure the availability of highly qualified lawyers in remote communities, the project has also commissioned five professional lawyers to provide free legal aid to vulnerable groups in the Osh and Batken regions. Since May 2020, USAID’s Jigerduu Jarandar project assisted 94 persons in the Batken and Osh regions in obtaining important identity ....
