The UCI updates its health protocol for road cycling events in 2021 02/26/21 The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) today published an updated Covid-19 health protocol applicable to men’s and women’s road competitions registered on the 2021 UCI International Calendar. The document, drafted by the steering group headed up by the UCI Medical Director, Professor Xavier Bigard, is broadly similar to the 2020 protocol but features changes made in response to developments in the international health situation. The most notable of these developments are rapid scientific advances (the creation of vaccines) and new characteristics of the pandemic (mutations of the virus and rapid spread of variants).

The participants hailed the fact that the 2021 road season has started, and that several high-level events are taking place thanks to the implementation and respect of extremely strict and effective sanitary protocols. As of today, 38 events have been cancelled in 2021 at men’s and women’s professional level (Class 1 and above). While some of these are definitively cancelled and will not take place before 2022, others have requested to be rescheduled to a later date in 2021. This is the case of 24 events. The UCI reinforces rider safety and its commitment to sustainable development 02/05/21 The Management Committee of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) met on 3 and 4 February. With travel restrictions still in place worldwide because of the health crisis (coronavirus pandemic), the meeting of the Federation’s executive body again took place by videoconference, and not during the recent UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Ostend (Belgium) as originally planned. The UCI Management Committee approved a plan to improve rider safety, approved a new strategy for sustainable development, awarded the UCI Bike City label to new cities and regions, and attributed the organisation of several events.
