‘The straight line belongs to men, the curved one to God,” architect Antoni Gaudi once said.
Architect Victor Lundy borrowed from God freely. He was known for such curvaceous 1950s buildings as St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Herron House in Venice and the “Blue Pagoda” pavilion that he designed for the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.
Early in his career, Lundy was associated with the “Sarasota School” of architecture, which was a regional adaptation of 20th-century International Style modernism that flourished in Florida from the 1940s to the 1960s. ....

8 Modernist Styles That Define Modernism in Architecture

Describing an architecture style as “modern” may inherently be a bit confusing. After all, a structure was modern while it was being designed and built. Why then, do so many movements and styles in the 20th-century fall under
modernism? What was so different that designers felt the need to label their work as indicative of a new future? And why did architects feel the need to outline rules for our built environment in the first place? Many of these questions have answers that are directly influenced by historic events. Others are less direct and are engrained in ....

Have you ever heard of the Terrace Plaza Hotel in Cincinnati? Built in 1948 by the then emerging architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it was America’s first hotel in the postwar era. Its sky lobby a revolutionary idea sat on the eighth floor, above a department store. It was the first hotel to have elevators without operators in them, the first to have rooms with individual temperature controls, and it even had sofas that would convert to beds at the push of a button. ....

Gum Surgeon Fights Co-op Renovation to Keep Practice Open

In a memo filed last week, attorneys for Froum called the default notice a “pressure tactic” which amounted to a threat of eviction.
Froum, a dental surgeon whose practice occupies a ground-floor unit at the cooperative, is the sole shareholder whose windows haven’t been replaced. The work, his attorneys argue, would close “an essential surgical facility during the height of the worst pandemic in generations.”
His attorneys estimate that closing his office would cost Froum $500,000 in lost income and other costs.
Attorneys for Froum declined to comment. Attorneys for the co-op did not return a request for comment.
Froum’s office stayed open, as allowed, during New York City’s spring lockdown. From March 16 to June 12, with the city largely shut to stop the spread of the coronavirus, Froum performed 110 emergency surgeries which his lawyers said kept those patients out of badly needed hospital beds. Since then, he’s seen more than 500 patients. ....
