Allen Park, Royal Oak, Rochester downtowns awarded for thriving through COVID-19 pandemic


They beat the pandemic odds against small business.
Now they’re getting accolades along with cash prizes. In nationwide contests judging how downtowns big and small not only survived the pandemic, but even thrived through it, metro Detroit has three winners: Allen Park, Rochester and Royal Oak.
Each won for playing creative defense against the nationwide shutdown that began March 16 last year. Despite the odds, their marketing bosses found ways to encourage take-out dining and COVID-19-safe shopping.
Nationwide, traditional downtowns fared better than strip malls and shopping centers during the past year, said urban experts at the International Downtown Association in Washington, D.C. One reason is that classic downtowns gave virus-wary visitors lots of choices in a dense area. Another is that those areas felt safely familiar to many consumers, especially those who lived nearby. Lobby Wrap: Cannabis sales and regulation targeted by lobbyists

B.C.-based cannabis company Tilray is seeking discussions with Health Canada about the rules governing cannabis beverages, as well as equivalencies with other cannabis products, which became legal in Canada in 2019.
On Monday, Tilray announced the completion of its deal with Aphria to become “a leading cannabis-focused consumer-packaged-goods company.” According to the news release on the company website, it wants to “have a complete portfolio of cannabis 2.0 products to strengthen its leadership position.”
Meanwhile, the Association Québecoise de l’industrie du cannabis is also seeking discussions with the government about topics that include medical-grow licences, additional oversight programs, development of a marketing and branding regime, and the application of excise tax on medical cannabis. ....
