Neighbors' Myanmar consensus endorsed

A consensus reached by ASEAN leaders on the need for constructive dialogue in Myanmar, with an end to violence, is encouraging as a means of helping to resolve the tensions in the country, experts said.
The consensus was agreed at a meeting of leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Jakarta on Saturday. It was significant, the experts said, but the process in Myanmar would take some time.
Dylan Loh, an assistant professor of public policy and global affairs at Nanyang Technological University, said the consensus shows there is a possibility that the Myanmar military may be willing to de-escalate tensions. ....

Asean s highly anticipated special summit tomorrow in Jakarta on Myanmar s crisis can be declared moot on arrival. What goes into it is likely more telling that what will come out of it. Nearly three months and more than 730 civilian deaths after Myanmar s military coup on Feb 1, Asean is still unable to address its rogue member state s atrocities against its own people. The summit attendance foretells trends and dynamics of what might come next in Myanmar s fast-moving and deadly events on the ground and how they will shape regional responses and global concerns. ....

Not long ago, democracy seemed to be surging in the region. But in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and elsewhere, it is in trouble.
Late last month, foreign officials in army regalia toasted their hosts in
Naypyitaw, the bunkered capital built by Myanmar s military. Ice clinked in frosted glasses. A lavish spread had been laid out for the foreign dignitaries in honor of Myanmar s Armed Forces Day.
That very day, the military, which had seized power February 1, gunned down more than 100 of its own citizens. Far from publicly condemning the brutality, the military representatives from neighbouring countries India, China, Thailand and Vietnam among them posed grinning with the generals, legitimising their putsch. ....
