It is a matter of great pleasure that The Tribune is celebrating its 140th anniversary. The Tribune, which started its journey with the dedicated efforts of a philanthropist from Punjab, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, on February 2, 1881, from Lahore, had to restart its publication firstly from Shimla and a few months later from Ambala as a consequence of Partition of the subcontinent in 1947. The paper has since then been continuously keeping the people abreast of the latest information about the events taking place locally as well as globally very truly. It is the oldest and most trusted newspaper of North India and is presently being published from Chandigarh, Gurugram and other centres. It is also a matter of pride and satisfaction for the management of this newspaper that since its inception it has lived up to the best expectations of the people at large and has, as such, carved for itself a unique position among the distinguished centenarian

A newspaper, essentially, serves as a recorder of change. Few newspapers in India have captured the passage of history with the objectivity and sincerity than The Tribune. The paper remains the most credible chronicler of political, social, cultural, and developmental events in India, particularly in the northern region of India, since its inception in 1881.
The Tribune has been the most popular, independent, informative and influential newspaper of North India.
It was founded by a great patriot and enlightened philanthropist, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, with his firm belief that ‘the salvation of the country lay in imparting all-round, systematic and modern education to its citizens’. It is one of the few newspapers that have remained true to the values and vision of its founders.

Commencing publication at Lahore on February 2, 1881, The Tribune had to face numerous trials and tribulations during the British rule and yet again in 1947 when it was uprooted from its home.
In the decades past, The Tribune has fearlessly safeguarded its professional integrity and unfailingly discharged its acclaimed role as the Voice of the People. Notwithstanding the recurring ups and downs, The Tribune has continued to enjoy the pre-eminent position among the newspaper readers in the whole of North India.
Today, on the 140th anniversary of our Founding Day, the Trustees of the Tribune Trust, all functionaries of The Tribune Group of newspapers and teachers, students and staff of the Tribune School pay respectful homage to our farsighted founder, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, and rededicate ourselves to devotedly carrying forward his noble mission.
