Undergraduate Researcher in College of Creative Studies Wins Prestigious Churchill Scholarship

Alec Cao, a fourth-year physics major in the College of Creative Studies, has won one of seventeen 2021-2022 Churchill Scholarships.Â
Cao will be traveling to the United Kingdom for one year of masterâs study at Churchill College in the University of Cambridge. The scholarship covers full tuition, a stipend, travel costs and an opportunity to apply for a $2000 special research grant, according to the Churchill Scholarship website. Churchill College is the only college at Cambridge focused on S.T.E.M. subjects.

Cao will work with Zoran Hadzibabic, a professor of physics in the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge studying ultracold quantum gases.Â ....

Guowei Qi, a fourth-year student from West Des Moines, Iowa, has been named one of 17 Churchill scholars in the nation.

Qi will graduate in May with degrees in biochemistry, computer science, and mathematics
and is the fifth University of Iowa student to receive the fellowship. The award wouldn’t have been possible, Qi says, without mentors like Michael Schnieders, associate professor of biochemistry and biomedical engineering.
As part of Schnieders’ research group in the College of Engineering, Qi uses theoretical biophysics and computer algorithms to represent the interactions of water molecules and simulate the folding of proteins. Protein folding is a cellular process during which proteins ....

University of Georgia senior Landon Clark of Leesburg will continue his studies in the biological sciences this fall through the Churchill Scholarship, which funds American students as they pursue a one-year master’s program at the University of Cambridge in England.
Clark is UGA’s second Churchill Scholar. The scholarship, which was first awarded in 1963, is given to 15 students each year after a rigorous application and interview process. Churchill Scholars attend Churchill College, the only college at the University of Cambridge to specialize in science and technology.
