New Avera hospital opens in Gettysburg

This week, staff and patients at Avera Missouri River Health Center are moving into a new hospital and clinic in Gettysburg.
The emergency department opened in the new location on Dec. 14, and the clinic opened Dec. 17 with full facility functions up and running by Dec. 18. A virtual open house is planned for January 2021 so the community can see photos and video tours of the new facility.
Avera Missouri River Health Center is a $12 million, 21,800 square-foot facility that has: a seven-bed inpatient hospital unit, a clinic, a new emergency services department, a surgical suite, radiology and imaging services, and a new therapy gym. It cost $12 million. ....

It’ll likely be next week (Dec. 21-25, 2020) before the COVID-19 vaccine is available to designated Phase 1 workers at the Avera facilities in Pierre.
Dr. Mikel Holland is the President and Chief Medical Officer at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. He says at the direction of the South Dakota Department of Health, Avera’s first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed in Sioux Falls only. Holland anticipates Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, as well as Avera Missouri River Health Center in Gettysburg, will receive vaccine with the next shipment, which may arrive next week (Dec. 21-25, 2020). He says they have a local team working on the logistics of who, when and where they’ll be vaccinating when it arrives. ....

The newly constructed Avera Missouri River Health Center in Gettysburg, SD, will start seeing patients next week.
The emergency department doors will open Monday (Dec. 14, 2020). Patients will move to the new inpatient facility that day. The Avera Medical Group Gettysburg clinic will begin operations Thursday (Dec. 17) with full facility functions starting Friday (Dec. 18).
