That was the go-for-it greeting voiced Monday at St. Thomas city council by Mayor Joe Preston for Project Tiny Hope, the initiative to build affordable housing on the former Elgin Handles property on Kains Street.
“If you are looking for support, I’ve seen nothing but thumbs up from this group,” Mayor Joe told Lindsay Rice, director of services and community development for St. Thomas-Elgin YWCA, and Doug Tarry, president of Doug Tarry Ltd., after their presentation and Q-and-A on the project, a partnership between the YW, the builder and non-profit Sanctuary Homes housing group.
LONDON, ONT. Community partners in St. Thomas have launched the Project Tiny Hope affordable housing project. It ll be located at t 21 Kains Street and it s a partnership between the YWCA St.Thomas-Elgin, Sanctuary Homes and Doug Tarry Homes. The project will include 20 tiny homes and a multi-story apartment building with green space and community gardens. “Our goal is to provide housing that is affordable while enhancing the community”, says Marla Champion, Executive Director of YWCA. A $200,000 donation was provided by Sanctuary Homes to purchase the lot, a $1.5 million capital campaign has now begun. The site requires an extensive environmental clean-up and Doug Tarry Limited has donated $280,000 to cover the cost.

For years, it was home to a factory that provided St. Thomas residents with a future.
Now, the long-idle site of mostly demolished Elgin Handles Ltd. is going to serve the community once again.

The Kains Street property has been bought for Project Tiny Hope, St. Thomas-Elgin YWCA’s ambitious supported-housing initiative to fight homelessness through its partnership with Doug Tarry Homes and Sanctuary Homes, a faith-based non-profit pursuing affordable housing. While the purchase price of the property was not disclosed, it was made possible by a $200,000 donation from Sanctuary.
