Musician Apryll Aileen (Image: Apryll Aileen Facebook) Saint John-based musician Apryll Aileen is releasing new single, “Home,” on Friday April 23, followed by a livestreamed concert presented by Paris Crew. Aileen grew up in St. Martins and music had always been an integral part of her life, from her uncle and father playing guitar and harmonica around the kitchen table to her mother and grandmother playing the piano. “Piano has been in my life since I was five and I’ve always written, whether it was journaling or poetry just a sort of self-therapy in a way, as a young person,” says Aileen. “I remember I was at Rothesay High and I had the deepest fear ever of singing, so I never sang before that and I remember my teacher getting me to audition.” ....
The Manton Avenue Project (pictured on Facebook) is one of the grant recipients. The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities has announced major grant awards to 15 public projects and documentary films that showcase the power of the humanities to connect communities and strengthen civil society. “This past year has presented so many obstacles to humanities organizations, to scholars, and to artists. Nevertheless, this community has adapted to the pandemic and risen to the challenge to reach people through the humanities, to contend with the past and to be part of a movement for justice. The humanities are showing the way to a renewed civil society. This year’s major project grants promise to do this in bold and creative ways,” said Elizabeth Francis, Executive Director. ....
