Florine “Peggy” Eisele, age 98, entered the Lord’s kingdom at the Vermont Veterans Home surrounded by her family on April 13, 2021.
She was born to Julian and Lena “Dixie” (Ward) Smith in Norfolk, Virginia. The family moved to Peekskill. After college in New York City and the beginning of World War II, she answered the call to service and joined the U.S. Navy. In 1942, Peggy attended the Naval War College in Rhode Island and went on to serve as a cryptographer stationed at Pearl Harbor, for which she was awarded a commendation for her service with the U.S. Naval Communications Intelligence Organization. Peggy was always proud of her military service. ....

LAKE PLACID Members of the North Elba Town Council unanimously approved the hiring of Haley Breen as the town’s first-ever community development director on Tuesday evening. The next day, she was on the job.
Breen was recommended by the Lake Placid/North Elba Community Development Commission’s ad hoc Development Director Group, consisting of Community Development Commission Chairman Dean Dietrich, town Councilor Emily Politi, Lake Placid village Mayor Craig Randall, village Trustee Art Devlin, Peter Roland and Kate Thompson.
“She is a soon to be graduate of Cornell Institute for Public Affairs (CIPA) with a Master of Public Affairs and a concentration in environmental policy,” Politi wrote in an email Tuesday after the vote. “She starts tomorrow and one of her first tasks will be to write a press release announcing herself.” ....

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee has released two different buttons for this year’s Carnival, designed as always by Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau.
Using the Winter Carnival’s designated theme “Mask-erade” — although the button spells it the standard way, “Masquerade” — Trudeau’s illustrations show six Doonesbury characters, three on each button, wearing a variety of masks.
Mike Doonesbury’s mask features pine cones, BD’s has a skier, Boopsie’s has a bunny, Joanie’s has Hudson Bay blanket colors (green, red, yellow and indigo on a white background), Uncle Duke’s has a hole for his cigarette holder, and Zonker wears a snowflake mask over his eyes. ....
