Sarasota County restricts fertilizer use in summer as red tide lurks

John Morgan is Sarasota County’s Air and Water Quality supervisor. He said that environmentally friendly fertilizers contain zero nitrogen and zero phosphorus. Excess amounts of these naturally occurring nutrients can create a harmful imbalance when washed away into storm drains and carried to local water bodies.
Reducing the amount of nutrients collected by stormwater runoff helps protect natural habitats in area waterways that receive runoff from our stormwater system, Morgan said. We are a growing community, and it will take a community effort to reduce nutrient pollution and continue having healthy waterways, beaches and more.
Red tide algae blooms continue to persist in Southwest Florida. Karenia brevis the scientific name for the red tide organism was detected in 38 samples this week. It was found in background concentrations in Sarasota County and very low concentrations in Charlotte County.  ....

Seagrass decline in Sarasota Bay is cause for concern | Sarasota

Just as land animals can be affected by deforestation, marine animals can be affected by a decline in seagrass growth, and recent data shows area wildlife could be in trouble.
Following a variety of environmental and human-made factors, Sarasota Bay is experiencing a 12-year loss in seagrass growth.
Preliminary results from the Southwest Florida Water Management District show an 18% decline in seagrass across Sarasota Bay, Roberts Bay and Little Sarasota Bay from 2018 to 2020. The decline equates to loss of 2,300 acres of seagrass.
“A healthy bay leads to a healthy bay, so everything is tied together,” Sarasota Bay Watch Secretary John Ryan said. “Having healthy seagrass is really important to our bay ecosystem because about 75% of marine life have some part of their life in seagrass, so this is not great.” ....

Crews Remain At Piney Point Processing Plant To Contain Potential Breach

/
Additional pumps were scheduled to come online this morning and should double the amount of water that can be taken out.
Crews remain at the scene Monday of the leaking Piney Point processing plant in Manatee County and are monitoring the conditions as it threatens to breach.
Over the weekend, Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency at the phosphate processing pond, which if it breaches could result in hundreds of millions of gallons of water flowing into the neighboring area and Tampa Bay.
Manatee County Administrator Scott Hopes on Sunday provided a more optimistic assessment, a day after a breach at the processing plant located near the Hillsborough County line, south of Sun City Center was termed “imminent.” ....

Longboat Key's island neighbor gets some TLC | Longboat Key

Boats bumped over the brief bay ride on March 6 to the Sister Keys, where trash galore awaited the intrepid volunteers of Suncoast Waterkeepers, Sarasota Bay Watch and the Longboat Key Turtle Watch.
The cleanup is needed for the wild island, which not only has invasive plants but also has plenty of trash from boaters and waves. Longtime Longboater Rusty Chinnis often comes out to the island and used to work on the cleanup only with friends.
Now, the Longboat Key Public Works Department comes out to the island twice a year to clear the invasive plants like Australian pines and Brazilian pepper. The group spends a couple days clearing and killing the plants so they don t overtake the island. This event was different an event specifically to clean up trash on the island, organized by Suncoast Waterkeepers and Sarasota Bay Watch. Chinnis is involved in both organizations.  ....
