Managing Director of Giant Group Faruque Hassan has officially taken over as the president of the apex trade body. The office-bearers of BGMEA will serve for the 2021-23 term. Other office-bearers of the apex trade body are Syed Nazrul Islam (Chattogram), first vice president; SM Mannan Kochi, senior vice president; Shahidullah Azim, vice president; Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, vice president (finance); Miran Ali, vice president; Md Nasiruddin, vice president and Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, vice president (Chattogram).

Faruque Hassan elected new BGMEA president Sun Online Desk 5th April, 2021 10:09:58 Faruque Hassan has become the new president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) for the term 2021-2023. Hassan led Sammilita Parishad won the biennial election securing 24 posts of directors while the other panel, Forum Panel, led by ABM Shamsuddin won 11 posts. The election was held peacefully on Sunday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm at Hotel Radisson Blu in Dhaka and from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at regional office of BGMEA in Chattogram. The BGMEA polls witnessed a voters’ turnout of 86 percent. Out of the 1853 voters in Dhaka region, some 1604 BGMEA members cast their votes while out of the 461 voters in Chattogram region, some 392 voters cast their votes in Chattogram region.

On the other hand, Chairman of Hannan Group ABM Shamsuddin is leading the Forum panel as its candidate for president. Current BGMEA president Dr Rubana Huq is contesting as a panel member of Forum. Former Vice President of BGMEA Mohammad Nasir said a total of 14 polling booths have been set up to cast votes from 9am to 7pm - an extra 3 hours over the usual to allow COVID-19 health protocols to be maintained.
