By Cam Lucadou-Wells Health department and City of Greater Dandenong officials are expected to front a re-opened state parliamentary inquiry into the ‘slug gate’ affair. The new hearings were sparked by fresh questions about the shutdown of the Dandenong South-based caterer I Cook Foods by health authorities in early 2019. ICF’s sandwiches had been linked to the death of a Knox Private Hospital patient. However, a food safety assessment report by a Knox Council officer recently came to light that stated it was “more than likely” that the patient was eating the hospital’s “soft diet” sandwiches without crusts. By Cam Lucadou-Wells Victoria Police has re-opened its investigation of allegations of a corrupt compulsory shutdown of Dandenong South-based caterer I Cook Foods. ICF has claimed its 30-year-old business was improperly closed as part of a health department investigation into a hospital patient’s death in early 2019. The two-year public stoush has been branded ‘slug-gate’, including an allegation that a council food inspector planted a live slug on the factory floor. It has led to a Parliamentary inquiry, and the launch of a $50 million civil lawsuit by ICF against the Department of Health and Greater Dandenong Council. As a result of the shutdown, the business was destroyed and 41 employees lost their jobs, ICF claims. ....
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Opposition health spokeswoman Georgie Crozier has requested a copy of a ‘secret’ letter that purportedly exonerated I Cook Foods on the day of its enforced closure by health authorities. Ms Crozier told State Parliament that she lodged freedom-of-information requests for “critical correspondence’ sent by Knox City Council to the state’s health department on 22 February 2019. It was allegedly sent the same day that the Dandenong South-based ICF was closed by the department as part of an investigation into a patient’s death from an alleged listeria infection at Knox Private Hospital. By the time it re-opened six weeks later, the business was destroyed. Forty-one employees lost their jobs. ....
