Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara says public safety is his top priority

ROCKFORD  Acknowledging the city’s struggle to contain a pandemic-fueled violent crime surge last year, Mayor Tom McNamara on Wednesday said public safety remains his top priority.
During a pre-recorded annual State of the City address released Wednesday, McNamara announced plans to expand the scope of his domestic violence prevention office “to address violence and public safety issues across the community.”
“Clearly, the last 14 months have been some of the most challenging in our city’s 169-year history,” McNamara said. “The COVID-19 pandemic has left death and illness, along with economic and social destruction, in its wake. However, as we have so many times in our past, the people of Rockford came together to face the challenge. Our community is resilient, and our people have tremendous grit. We must not just simply reopen. Instead, we must rebuild.”  ....

Texas Legislature's Violence Prevention Effort Outside of Law Enforcement

When Rodney McIntosh saw the pistol, his instincts kicked in. He grabbed the armed man’s hand, shoved it down, and pushed him back into his car. It wasn’t McIntosh’s first time in a conflict on the verge of becoming a shooting. It’s his job. “You can’t do this in broad daylight,” McIntosh recalled telling the young man. If he’d pulled the trigger that day, prison wouldn’t be the only concern. “Someone is going to come shoot you, too,” McIntosh told him.
A community activist, pastor, and mentor, McIntosh, 44, leads a small team battling violence in east and south Fort Worth, using his experiences as a former gang member to mentor young men and mediate conflicts before they devolve into gun violence. The fledgling organization, called VIP Fort Worth, is one of a number of programs that could benefit from a new bill that would help grow and support community-based violence prevention and intervention programs in Texas. ....

Today, President Biden announced the American Jobs Plan, calling on Congress to pass a $12 billion investment in workers facing significant challenges. Part of this $12 billion investment includes $5 billion over eight years in support of evidence-based community violence prevention programs. In a statement, Ernest Coverson, the End Gun Violence Campaign Manager at Amnesty International USA, said:
“We applaud President Biden’s historic decision to take a critical step toward ending gun violence, which affects numerous communities across the country. Supporting funding of community-based programs, represents a victory for Amnesty International USA and the many partner and front-line organizations that have been pushing for this type of action. This year the “Invest in Us” coalition came together with a goal to secure federal funding to address gun violence, and in less than a month, the Biden Administration listened.  ....
