Alexander Maconochie Centre. CAPSICUM spray was used to control an “aggressive” riot involving 28 inmates at the Alexander Maconochie Centre on Wednesday (May 12) night. The spray was used on “one occasion” when the incident broke out, a spokesman for the Justice and Community Safety Directorate (JACS) said. It’s understood one inmate was injured, according to sources from inside the prison. Frustrations over covid visiting restrictions are believed to have started the melee. The restrictions are said to ban close contact between inmates and visitors, meaning detainees haven’t held their children for over a year. Whilst JACS denies the event was linked to visiting arrangements, the directorate said detainees are allowed one in person social visit each week from immediate family and kinship members, with up to two adults and two children visiting per session. ....

The blame landed squarely on the feet of ACT Corrective Services operating under the Justice and Community Safety Directorate over failing to deliver all aspects of mandatory training outlined in the enterprise agreement for officers at Alexander Maconochie Centre. But Minister for Corrections Mick Gentleman attributed a delay in training programs in 2020 to the pandemic after ACT Corrective Services had recommenced they only be conducted in a covid-safe way. ....
ACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury. THE ACT government delayed the public release of a report into the review of the family violence act until after Labor and the Greens were returned to power. Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury has denied the lapse of nine months between the final report completed in March 2020 following feedback after its draft copy and its release in December of that year were politically motivated to avoid scrutiny of an election campaign. “I’ve been very clear that this is an important report that the government is actually going to follow through on,” Mr Rattenbury said. The previous government of the ninth Legislative Assembly had “a number of concerns with the report” after it was submitted to the the Justice and Community Safety Directorate. ....
