CAP St Joseph allocated $250,000 for temporary labor assistance program

St. Joseph Post The Community Action Partnership of Greater St. Joseph has been allocated $250,000 of CARES Act funding for a temporary labor assistance program. CAP St. Joe Executive Director Whitney Lanning says this program creates jobs to help the homeless and unemployed population get back on their feet. “Get residents from our homeless shelter involved in various clean-up activities around the community,” Lanning said. “They get paid an hourly wage for that service.” The city partners with Workforce Solutions in St. Joseph to operate this program. Lanning says the city first started the labor assistance program about 1.5 years ago with positive results, but it was later suspended due to inadequate funding.

St Joseph s 2020 point-in-time count much lower than previous years due to COVID precautions

By TOMMY REZAC St. Joseph Post COVID-19 has had a significant financial impact on people all across the United States and the world. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, and therefore, struggled to pay for basic needs like rent and utility bills. Buchanan County was no exception. The Community Action Partnership of Greater St. Joseph has fielded an average of 200-300 calls per day from people in need of rental or utility assistance. Rachael Bittiker, the director of community development and public relations for CAP St. Joe, says the stimulus payments, including the $1,400 in the latest round of COVID relief from Congress, helps temporarily.

More than $500,000 spent by organizations after South Side flood

Recovery from the July flooding of Contrary Creek has been anything but simple for those living in the more than 200 homes impacted by it on the South Side. Multiple organizations combined to spend more than $250,000 on everything from rent and hotel rooms to furnaces, plumbing and other materials. Church of Christ Disaster Relief through East Hills Church of Christ alone spent more than $250,000 on new beds, water heaters, washers, dryers, stoves and refrigerators, among other things. This half-a-million-dollar figure doesn’t include any labor, as many of the churches provided volunteers to help. And right when some real progress was happening with construction, another spike in COVID-19 cases caused restrictions.
