J-W Editorial staff Lawrence Journal-World Editorial A wonderful sign of the human spirit was on display this holiday season as city officials, local nonprofits, a local business and community volunteers came together to fill an urgent need. On Dec. 23, the city finalized an agreement with Lawrence’s Days Inn hotel to serve as a temporary shelter for homeless individuals who otherwise would find themselves battling the harsh elements of Kansas winter nights. This is the second such hotel project in the community, with the other one operating at the Econo Lodge University hotel. This latest project undoubtedly took a lot of last-minute planning and unexpected work from many parties. It is a testament to Lawrence’s community spirit of compassion that the work got done and that individuals are now being safely housed at the hotel. ....
Montgomery County community members take new measures amid Code Blue advisory WPVI NORRISTOWN, Pennsylvania (WPVI) When the temperatures take a dip, local municipalities take measures to protect the homeless. That is true for Montgomery County where a Code Blue was in effect Tuesday night for 12 hours. The Norristown Safehouse, a new designated Code Blue shelter, and was full. Staff member Christina Powell-Williams was doing what she could to get those most vulnerable indoors. It s a lot of homeless in Norristown, so a lot of (places) are full, said Powell-Williams. I decided to do something on my own and this is why I started the shelter for Code Blue. ....
Kristy Pszanowski struggled to hold back tears as she remembered Kelly Fowler. She wore bright pink lipstick, she was just happy all the time, the lead Homeless Outreach Team member at the Poverello Center homeless shelter in Missoula, recalled. She called me sunshine. Last year she gave me a little ring that had a sun on it to remember her. Fowler was one of the 25 individuals experiencing homelessness in Missoula County that passed away in 2020. On Monday night, the longest night of the year, a Homeless Persons Memorial took place and streamed live in front of the Poverello Center and at the Johnson Street Community Shelter. The name of each person was painted on a sign and read aloud by the members of the Homeless Outreach Team, who work with and visit and get to know Missoula County s homeless population throughout the year. ....

Tony Evers announced on Friday with Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) Secretary Mary Kolar announced $620,940 in grants were awarded to 16 registered nonprofit organizations that provide financial assistance, entrepreneurship training, or other services to Wisconsin veterans and their families, according to a news release. Our veteran community in Wisconsin is at its best when organizations work together to provide care and assistance to our nation s heroes, Gov. Evers said. Especially after a difficult year for all of us, when many of our most vulnerable veterans are hurting, it is critical that we support these important organizations that can serve as a lifeline to veterans and their families. ....
