(Matthew Garand/CBC) Saskatchewan s advocate for children and youth says 2020 was one of the worst years the province has had when it comes to children dying violently. Earlier this week, advocate Lisa Broda released her annual report, which detailed how nine confirmed child deaths in the province last year led to police homicide investigations, or charges of murder or manslaughter. That was more than the last seven years combined. The advocate s report does not identify any of the children who died, but family members of one of those children is speaking out about a lack of support. ....
FSIN calls for Indigenous representation in gov’t review of Regina’s Raising Hope program By Moises Canales Mar 3, 2021 4:30 PM The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations wants the provincial government’s review of Regina’s Raising Hope program to include one of their own First Nations representatives. The program is in place to support vulnerable, at-risk women in the community. The call comes after the death of 30-year-old Marilyn Gordon, a former resident who accessed the program for several months in 2020. She was suddenly evicted from Raising Hope by staff four months prior to her passing on Jan. 3, 2021. Her father Roland Desjarlais said on Wednesday that Gordon struggled with mental illness and substance abuse since the passing of her mother in 2017. She ended up entering the Raising Hope program last year in order to heal from her trauma. Desjarlais said it was her way to take steps to rebuilding her life. ....

NDP MLA calls on provincial government to fund Regina warming shelter By Moises Canales Jan 28, 2021 2:49 PM A local MLA wants to see the Saskatchewan government provide funding for a warming centre in Regina after it was denied financial support by the province. Meara Conway, Regina-Elphinstone MLA and NDP social services critic, said Awasiw: A Place of Hope is a warning centre that has been opened in constituency since December. The centre sees hundreds of people come through its doors each day whether it’s finding a meal or needing a place to sleep. She said traffic at the warming place has ramped up in recent weeks because of frigid temperatures in the Queen City, and Awasiw’s members have approached multiple levels of government to secure funding to assist with its operational costs. ....
