City prepares for storm-related shelter surge

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. In preparation for the severe winter weather expected this weekend, the city of Albuquerque says it is preparing to accommodate a potential surge in emergency shelter demand by repurposing a hotel it had been using for COVID-19 isolation.
The city, in collaboration with Bernalillo County, the state and other partners, has a network of five area hotels currently operating as an extension of its West Side homeless shelter. The hotels accommodate people who might ordinarily use the shelter but require isolation because they have been exposed to COVID-19 or are at high risk for virus-related complications. Some hotel space is reserved for families who are homeless. ....

The city of Albuquerque’s COVID-19 emergency shelter system has run out of room for families, officials said Tuesday.
Despite expanding capacity by adding a network of “wellness” hotels, Albuquerque Family and Community Services Director Carol Pierce said the city has maxed out the space it has available for families who are homeless.

“We don’t have more rooms available,” she said Tuesday morning during a Homeless Coordinating Council meeting with city, Bernalillo County and University of New Mexico leaders. “As soon as one comes up, they are rapidly filled.”
While there is still room for adult men and adult women, the family units are full with what Pierce called a “staggering” number of children. ....

Middle and high school students will learn remotely indefinitely in New Mexico while the freeze on limited K-3 and special education programs will end sooner in January than education officials previously said.
The minority of elementary schools that have opened hybrid learning programs can resume on Jan. 18. K-3 and special education students can return to a 5:1 student-teacher ratio earlier that month.
In back-to-back presentations to the Legislature and members of the media Friday, the Public Education Department says it is engaging more absentee students and accounting for more of the 12,000 students it had reported as  “missing” from public school rolls. ....
