Anti-vilification law experts from Australia and New Zealand will meet for an online forum on Wednesday 7 July to discuss recent developments in hate laws on both sides of the Tasman.
While laws exist in most democracies to regulate public speech that expresses hate or encourages violence based on someone’s race, religion, sexual orientation or other protected attributes, these laws are controversial because they may be perceived as limiting free speech.
Victoria University’s College of Law and Justice lecturer and panellist Bill Swannie says that parliamentary reviews into anti-vilification laws in Victoria, New South Wales and the Commonwealth may have contributed to confusion as to the purpose of these laws, and the types of harm they seek to prevent: ....

Victorians should be shocked by the latest leaked hotel quarantine report which reveals months of bungles and mismanagement in the system when we were told it was fixed. Sloppy practices, untrained staff and poor hygiene standards should be of great concern to millions of Victorians still traumatised from last year’s lockdown.
Missed tests and wearing the same mask for long periods of time are worrying, but what is of most concern is the government’s willingness to mislead the public and deflect blame for outbreaks. This has the potential to do much greater harm.

Campaigners are shocked after a person was seen driving a car through Victoria with a Nazi swastika sticker attached to the window.
A person was waiting in their vehicle at a McDonald s drive-thru in Bendigo, west of Melbourne, over the weekend.
They noticed the unmistakable symbol of Germany s Third Reich, which was placed next to a sticker of a red skull and what appears to be one or two other stickers.
They snapped a picture of the offending vehicle and sent it to authorities.
