Athens-Clarke police have joined with a company to produce a Community Crime Map the public can access to see where crimes occur.
The department is working with LexisNexis Risk Solutions on the map, which shows the dates, locations and types of crimes.
“It’s a matter of transparency,” police Lt. Shaun Barnett said Friday. “Oftentimes, people are looking to move into a certain area of town so they want to see what the crimes are in the area so this is an easy way for people to get that information.”
In addition, people can sign up on the site for email crime alerts. The map provides basic information, but doesn’t give a specific address or details of the crime, Barnett said.
Crime map, Radar Speed Signs, first steps in community safety initiative

The Chillicothe Police Department (CPD) began a community safety initiative in 2020 after Chillicothe voters passed the law enforcement tax, Chillicothe Police Chief Jon Maples said the department is now finalizing the initiative with the first focus being on the community and its safety. As of April 9, we have the LexisNexis® Community Crime Map and four Radar Speed Display Trailers, Maples said in a press release.
The LexisNexis® Community Crime Map connects law enforcement with the community to reduce crime and improve public safety. Crime mapping helps the public get a better idea of the crime activity in their area so they can make more informed decisions about how to stay safe. This also assists law enforcement with analyzing and problem-solving crime in problematic areas, along with analyzing staffing issues and time frames.
Santa Clara police department to encrypt its radio communication system later this month

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Currently, residents are able listen to Santa Clara police radios, but that will change by the end of April, police said Wednesday.
This week, Santa Clara police said they will be transitioning to encrypted police radio channels by April 26 so that they are in compliance with California Department of Justice policies.
The switch will stop those with commercial scanners or smartphone scanning apps from being able to listen to radio traffic and hear police discuss crimes or incidents as they occur.

Jessica Robledo, Pflugerville s first female and Latina police chief, announced her retirement Tuesday night.
Robledo has led the Pflugerville Police Department since 2017. Prior to that, she was an Austin police officer for 30 years and retired in 2016 from the Austin Police Department, where she had served as an assistant police chief.
Both Robledo and city spokeswoman Maggie Holman declined to comment on the reasoning for the chief s departure. The Statesman has submitted an open records request for Robledo s personnel file, including all recommendations, reviews, formal complaints and any disciplinary actions.
In a statement on Twitter, Robledo said: 4 years ago, I came out of retirement to answer the call to serve this amazing community as your Chief. As I transition to another chapter of my life, I am thankful to the people of Pflugerville, Mayor Gonzales and Council for this honor. Love you PF!”
