ICYMI: Film music editor Peter Myles in conversation with Classical IPR

Peter Myles has been a Hollywood film music editor for over 20 years.  He recently spoke with Classical IPR s Amanda Sewell about his career, starting from his time as a student at Interlochen Arts Camp and Academy. After earning degrees from the New England Conservatory and Northwestern, Myles played the trumpet professionally and then became a producer for the Delos record label. In the late 1990s, he made the transition to Hollywood and has worked on blockbuster films including installments in the Jason Bourne, Harry Potter and Star Wars Series. Northern Michigan soprano portrays Jesus in new 'Passion According to St. Luke'

6:45 In most musical Passion settings, the role of Jesus Christ is sung by a baritone or a bass. But in William Cooper’s new Passion, Jesus will be played by a soprano. “I thought giving the role of Jesus to a high soprano would set the character apart from the others and mark the character as being divine and other,” Cooper says. He wanted to feature a female voice in his setting because women are largely silent in the Biblical texts. “I was looking through the cast of characters in the gospel account,” he explains, “and all of the big speaking roles are male.”

Metropolitan Opera: Rusalka

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducted a cast led by soprano Renée Fleming who starred in one of her signature roles as Rusalka, the water nymph who longs to become human. Tenor Piotr Beczała was the fickle Prince, and mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick was Ježibaba, the witch who grants Rusalka’s wish at an awful price. Bass John Relyea sang Rusalka’s father, the Water Gnome, and soprano Emily Magee was the jealous Foreign Princess. Rusalka will be heard over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 3. Listen to it on Classical IPR.

Outdoors: Snakes and frogs

I still remember most of the lyrics and the legends. In one, St. Patrick preached a sarmin that drove the frogs out of the bogs and banished all the varmin. That legend is dubious. Snakes and frogs did not live in Ireland even before the good saint launched his preaching career. If reptiles and amphibians were ever in Ireland, and based on the lack of fossil evidence, most scientists believe they were not, they were wiped out during the Ice Ages.  When the glaciers melted, Ireland was cut off from Europe. So with one or two rare exceptions, reptiles and amphibians were unable to reach the Emerald Isles.
