Conflicts are a cause of high poverty levels among the people of Northern Ghana, a survey has shown. These conflicts are due to disputes over land, political and traditional leadership and competition for natural resources. Madam Janet Adama Mohammed, Programme Director for Conciliation Resources, an advocacy organisation for peace in West Africa, said a General Social Survey (GSS) conducted by her outfit two years ago indicated that Northern Ghana, comprising the Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West Regions, had the highest poverty levels due to conflicts. Madam Mohammed was addressing stakeholders in Tamale at a Regional dialogue under the Conflict, Security and Stability Fund (CSSF) project on the drivers of conflict and security in Northern Ghana. ....
New platform puts women at the forefront of peacemaking Format 8 Mar 2021 A new online database of women mediators has been launched today, designed to enable more women to play crucial roles in peace and mediation processes around the world. The first of its kind, the platform serves as a publicly available resource to search for, and identity, qualified women mediators. It can be used by organisations such as the United Nations, or national governments involved in peace processes, to help them search for candidates based on their specific areas of expertise, location and languages. Between 1992 – 2019, women made up only 6% of mediators, 6% of signatories and 13% of negotiators in major peace processes, despite studies showing that women’s direct participation in peace negotiations increases the sustainability and quality of peace. ....
