I speak of the Islamaphobic car attack and the knowledge that thousands of children died at so-called residential schools. It is easy to feel powerless and helpless. One thing we can do is repeal Section 43 of the Criminal Code of Canada, covering corporal punishment. Kids have no right to their own “security of person” which is a fundamental freedom. Repealing Section 43 is one of the first calls to action to come out of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. If we repeal this law, using our voices, votes and petition signatures, not only will we be stating as a nation, at long last, that violence against children is wrong, it might people whose behaviour stems from things outside their control, such as illness, injury or mental illness, to get the special treatment they need. ....
