Bihar: Nitish Kumar is Trying to Consolidate the Luv-Kush-Dhanuk Axis to Expand Social Base

Patna: Concerned about the poor performance of the party in the recently-concluded state assembly elections, the Janata Dal (U) supremo and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar is trying to consolidate its vote base of Kurmi and Koeri (Luv-Kush) and further strengthen its electoral base from other castes. The legislative tally of the JD (U) was reduced from 115 in 2010 to 43 in 2020 – fall of 72 seats in a decade.
To achieve his goal, the Bihar chief minister has relinquished the post of national president of the party and handed over the charge to RCP Singh, his trusted lieutenant and a Kurmi by caste. Simultaneously, former party MLA Umesh Kushwaha, a Koeri by caste, has been appointed as the state party president. The appointments are aimed at consolidating the Luv-Kush combination in favour of the party. ....

On January 24, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar wished a speedy recovery to ailing Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav, but the irony was not lost on anyone. The former Bihar chief minister, now serving a jail term after his conviction in three fodder scam cases, has been shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi by air ambulance where he is being treated for multiple ailments. ....

Counsel for the Indian Judiciary

Ensure fundamental rights, through every means available; the rest will follow on its own
The Indian judiciary is overburdened with pending cases while the wheels of justice move at a snail’s pace. There are ways, however, to improve the largest judiciary in the world.
One thing that continues to plague the judicial system is the overwhelming number of cases at almost every level of the judiciary. According to Jaya Jaitly, former president of the Samata Party, the over 3.1 crore cases are pending in the lower courts (83 lakh pending for over 10 years), 44 lakh in the high courts (32 lakh pending for over 10 years), and 60,000 cases in the Supreme Court (the figures are as of 2019). Prisons are filled with capacity up to 114 per cent, of which two-thirds are undertrials who have had no justice at all. These figures clearly show the sorry state of affairs vis-à-vis our judiciary. ....
