In his letter, ‘Israel-Palestinian violence: too many lives have been lost’, President Cyril Ramaphosa makes a number of factual errors, omissions, and risible statements that must be challenged. Five of these are particularly important.
The first is that “[the] root causes of [the] conflict” are “[the] illegal occupation by Israel of Palestinian land and the denial of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination”, and that “a viable Palestinian state existing side-by-side in peace with Israel…remains the most viable option for the peoples of Israel and Palestine, and must continue to be supported”.  ....

Events in Israel lay bare Tory tensions over Palestinian question

Last modified on Mon 17 May 2021 09.13 EDT
The recent outbreak of intercommunal violence in Israel has prompted two former Conservative Foreign Office ministers to urge the British government to realise the Palestinian issue cannot simply be managed in the hope it will fade away.
The calls reflect a tension inside the party over Palestine that has often been overshadowed by the more glaring disputes inside Labour over antisemitism.
Some observers predict the Tories’ recent electoral progress among Muslim voters may eventually erode the rock solid support for Israel in the party.
The Israeli police action at al-Aqsa mosque during Ramadan, they say, has offended the Conservatives’ strong belief in freedom of worship, and led to MPs being heavily lobbied. Some of that concern will be tempered by revulsion at the Hamas rocket attacks into Israel, and displays of antisemitic abuse in London and elsewhere. ....

Arab states split for first time on refusal to condemn Israel over Gaza

In what appeared to be a state-backed response, the hashtag “Palestine is not my cause” circulated in the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait over the weekend. It made little dent in region-wide support for Twitter accounts from Gaza and East Jerusalem decrying scenes of violence and the Israeli leadership.
“[These governments] are on the wrong side of public opinion in how they’re seen and received by the populations of the Arab region,” said Mohanad Hage Ali, research fellow at Carnegie Middle East Centre. “They’re trying to pursue an active foreign policy holding positions that they’ve never had before. They could be seen as synonymous with the Israeli occupation and the Israeli policy in the region. This will have an impact on not only Israel, but their new Arab allies. And this will tarnish their reputation.” ....

Armed drones used by Iran-backed militias against US and partners constitute new form of asymmetric warfare
Iran’s drone program has identified chink in its opponents’ armor and is actively exploiting this vulnerability

IRBIL, IRAQ: The drone threat posed to US and coalition personnel by Iran-backed militias is growing, and defenses against such threats remain limited particularly in the face of Tehran’s growing capabilities. That was the clear message delivered by the US military commander in the Middle East during his most recent visit to Iraq.
Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie’s warning came in the wake of a rash of drone attacks launched by Iran’s proxies and allied groups in the region against coalition positions and regional partners of the US, a development viewed by many as a sign of a shift in the strategic balance of power. ....
