Town makes deal for upcoming street maintenance


The Town Council has approved a cooperative purchase agreement with Southwest Slurry Seal for upcoming planned street pavement maintenance.
The contract amount is for $400,000, with some of that to be used during the current fiscal year, according to Public Works Director Justin Weldy.
“$250,000 to $350,000 will be available to use in June,” Weldy said.
Slurry seal is a surface treatment designed to extend the life of asphalt pavement in good condition and is considered a cost effective treatment when applied at the right time. It provides skid resistance, prevents moisture intrusion and protects the pavement structure from further oxidation and reveling, according to Weldy. ....

Changes for short-term rentals appear to stall


Efforts to return some authority to local governments to regulate short-term rentals in their communities has apparently failed for this session of the Arizona State Legislature.
Representative John Kavanagh (R-D23) of Fountain Hills introduced a bill in the House of Representatives at the beginning of the session that had the support of most local governments, including the Fountain Hills Town Council and the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.
Kavanagh told The Times that a bill introduced in the Senate as an alternative to his bill was really “watered down” and had no teeth. That bill was defeated in the Senate on a vote of 17-43. ....
