COVID cases at Avoca, C-G, Hornell among new positives in Steuben


Active cases in Steuben County continue recent decline

Cases associated with three local schools were among 17 Steuben County residents who tested positive for COVID-19 in Wednesday s report from the Steuben County Public Health Department.
Three individuals are associated with Avoca High School, Canisteo-Greenwood High School and the Hornell Intermediate School, said the county. 
Active cases continued to decline, falling to 216 down 12 from Tuesday and 98 since Friday. Steuben County s lower numbers reflect falling COVID-19 rates across the state. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that the statewide positivity of 3.54% is the lowest since Nov. 25.  
With winter breaks approaching for Steuben County schools, Public Health Director Darlene Smith urged residents planning trips to adhere to New York state’s travel guidelines. ....

County notes decline in new cases, has just over 500 active cases

BATH Steuben County s rate of new COVID-19 cases continued to slow in recent days. 
The Steuben County Public Health Department reported Tuesday that 109 Steuben County residents tested positive for COVID-19 since Friday s update. At times during the pandemic, the county has added over 100 cases per day. 
“This four day average of cases is very encouraging,” said Public Health Director Darlene Smith. “However, many case investigations over the weekend noted individuals that continued to work or socialize while symptomatic. Please continue to be diligent in efforts to slow the spread. If feeling unwell, be mindful about getting tested and not going to social gatherings, work, or other public locations where the spread could continue.”        ....

COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations up in Hornell area


Local officials urge community to take every precaution with significant increase in hospitalizations at St. James

HORNELL As the number of COVID-19 cases grows in Hornell and surrounding communities, with more patients being hospitalized at UR Medicine/St. James Hospital, local officials ask the community to take every precaution to maintain safety.
“We are experiencing a significant increase in hospitalizations at St. James,” said St. James president and CEO, Bryan O’Donovan. “We ask people to please continue to follow the guidelines to stay safe.”
Hornell City Mayor John Buckley concurs.
“It’s still important for people to avoid social gatherings with others outside of their immediate household,” he said. “We know it’s difficult especially around the holidays, but we want our community members to stay as healthy as possible.” ....
