NILESÂ â The Lansing-based organizers of a proposed cannabis music festival that could draw thousands of people to the city this fall are planning a smaller, invite-only event on July 31 as a trial run. They still hope to bring in well-known headliner bands across two days this fall, but the July event would tap a few local bands for country, jazz and contemporary tunes on just a single day. Up to 500 tickets would be sold or given, mostly through Niles cannabis businesses. In both cases, marijuana products would be sold and consumed in specific areas. But alcohol wouldn t be permitted. On Monday night, the Niles city council voted 6-2 to approve the smaller July festival, with members Georgia Boggs and William Weimer voting against it. ....

Organizers have told officials that it could draw 5,000 to 10,000 people across the two-day event, a thought that inspires city council members in terms of business and attention for Niles. Council member John DiCostanzo said the 21-and-older event could be a âmini-Woodstock.â But the council also echoed city Administrator Ric Huffâs desire to be âconservatively cautiousâ on how big it gets, at least this year, since âthere are a lot of unknowns and a lot of opportunities for it to morph into something thatâs not expected.â ....
