Alabama Possible to host virtual FAFSA workshops Updated 11:04 AM; Students and families can work one-on-one with high school counselors, career coaches and financial aid advisors to complete Free Applications for Financial Studnet Aid during a series of virtual workshops this month. FAFSAs are an essential document for college-bound students and often form the basis for scholarship packages. The workshops are hosted by the nonprofit Alabama Possible. The workshops will be held April 19, 20 and 21 at 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sessions will be for an hour and will be conducted via a private Zoom chat. Alabama students expecting to graduate in 2022 will now be required to apply for college federal aid in order to get their diplomas, or submit a form asking to opt-out of the requirement. The state s Department of Education voted to require next year s seniors to complete the Free Application For Student Aid, or FAFSA, during its Thursday board meeting. The resolution passed 6-3. The move, proponents said, will help to remove barriers for students who are unaware of the financial assistance available to them. Multiple Alabama college students and graduates called in virtually to the meeting to voice their support for the requirement, explaining how federal financial aid made their college aspirations possible. ....
Alabama Possible, a statewide nonprofit that breaks down barriers to prosperity, today announced that 51 schools will receive the Best Hustle Award for successfully improving their early Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion by at least 10 percent from 2019 to 2020. Early completion is defined as completion during the first two months of the FAFSA cycle (i.e., October 1 to December 1). Fort Payne High School received this recognition and had improved FAFSA completion by 27.81% when compared with 2019. All the schools participate in the Alabama Goes to College campaign, which is coordinated by Alabama Possible. Cash for College, a component of the Alabama Goes to College campaign, works with school counselors, career coaches, and other educators at high schools across the state to equip students to continue their education after high school by completing their financial aid form. ....
