While Maharashtra’s ICSE students clinched a perfect 100% success rate this year, high scores will not help in admissions to first-year junior colleges as the Common Entrance Test (CET) scores will be given priority in the first round, report Sandhya Nair & Hemali Chhapia. On Friday, Mumbai reported less than 5,000 cases for a fifth day in a row MUMBAI: April ended on a worrying note for Maharashtra with 17.8 lakh new Covid-19 cases and 13,835 deaths, highest monthly addition so far. Mumbai alone accounted for 2.3 lakh cases and 1,479 deaths. Though infections recorded in April were the highest since the beginning of the pandemic, the city s deadliest month continues to be June and July 2020 when 3,277 and 1,797 fatalities were registered respectively. The state reported a dip in daily detections on Friday adding 62,919 cases, taking total caseload to 46 lakh. Deaths reported were 828, taking total tally to 68,813. Daily Case Fatality Rate (CFR) has been more than 1% for the last six days. Monthly CFR for April was 0.7% against 0.3% in March. ....
A deserted Nesco vaccination centre on Wednesday after it was closed due to unavailability of vaccine doses MUMBAI: Citing an acute shortage of Covid-19 vaccines in the city, the civic body on Wednesday requested that only those due for their second doses should approach the centres on Thursday. The BMC said that 40 of the 73 private vaccination centres will remain shut. All public centres, on the other hand, will open after 12pm as they received a fresh stock of Covishield late on Wednesday. The BMC, in a statement released on Wednesday, said Mumbai was left with merely 47,740 doses around 2pm. And given the speed of vaccination, the remaining stock was likely to be fully utilised by the end of the day. Vaccination goes on till 8pm at several centres. On Wednesday, 44,629 people were vaccinated, a 39% drop from a record 72,606 vaccinations seen just the previous day. The largest centre at the BKC jumbo facility shut its gates after it exhausted the last of its 160 doses around 11.30am MUMBAI: Covid vaccination in the city dropped by 40% on Friday as 86 of the 120 inoculation centres closed due to unavailability of doses. Thousands had to be turned away and centres that operated saw winding queues. BMC chief I S Chahal said all 71 private centres will be shut on April 10, 11 and 12. Public centres will run normally on Sunday, but reduced hours on Saturday. “Citizens can travel to vaccination centres during the lockdown,” he clarified. The state too witnessed a dip of over a lakh in vaccination from the daily average of 4.27 lakh. ....
