BJP MP Sambhaji Chhatrapati on Friday warned that if the Maharashtra government does not approve his demands concerning the Maratha community by June 6, he would launch an agitation irrespective of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Speaking to reporters here, Sambhaji Chhatrapati, a descendant of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji, said he submitted a list of his demands to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday. He gave the list of demands over three weeks after the Supreme Court struck down the Maharashtra law granting quota to the Maratha community in admissions and government jobs, by terming it as unconstitutional , and held that there were no exceptional circumstances to breach the 50 per cent reservation cap set by the 1992 Mandal verdict.

MUMBAI: In a bid to provide relief to the Maratha community, the MVA government is looking at bringing in schemes and concessions along the lines of those extended in September 2020 after the quota was stayed by the Supreme Court.
An official linked to the cabinet sub-committee on Maratha reservation said the state is considering providing relie. “Various options will be discussed and steps finalised in 3-4 days or a week,” said the official.
In September 2020, the state had announced scholarships, concessions in hostel accommodation, a fund for ‘Sarthi,’ a non-profit government company for Marathas, withdrawal of 26 cases registered against Maratha youths during the quota agitation and government jobs for the next of kin of those who had died during the protests.

Even as Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said in the Maharashtra Assembly on Tuesday that his government was making every effort to get reservation for the Maratha community, MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, who is leading the community’s fight for quota, urged Thackeray to meet the protesters and hold a dialogue with them.
“I have met the Chief Minister several times in connection with the Maratha reservation issue…Maratha community members are angry as their demand for reservation remains unresolved. I urged the Chief Minister to meet the agitating Maratha youths and pacify them. If the Chief Minister speaks directly to them, the community will understand his government’s resolve,” Sambhajiraje said on Tuesday.
