An offender with pre-existing medical conditions at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women who tested positive for COVID-19 has died at a hospital. We continue working diligently to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our prisons because the health and safety of the staff and the offender population continues to be our top priority, said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. We sympathize with the offender s family, as losing a loved one is hard enough, but especially so during the holiday season.

Raleigh, N.C. Now that Christmas has come and gone, and the family gatherings are over, coronavirus testing sites are gearing up for an increase in visitors.
Wake County had three drive-thru testing sites open on Monday. The process is pretty quick and easy, and you don’t even have to get out of your car.
When you pull into the parking lot, you get a bag with a swab and a vial. You circle the swab in your nose several times, stick the swab in the vial, and hand it to a staffer on site.

Many people are choosing to get tested before seeing loved ones for the holiday, although health experts are advising Americans to avoid traveling and to gather with immediate household members only.

Recently, a reader commenting on my April 9, 2019 article, “Looking Back: South Snohomish County place names from the past,” asked how Shell Creek got its name?
In my reply to the reader’s question, I reached back to some of my own memories from well over 80 years ago, when I was a child of Edmonds before development of the land covered over portions of the creeks by piping their flow of water underground.
Of course, since Edmonds is a waterfront town with its creeks flowing into Puget Sound, it does seem logical to assume that the naming of Shell Creek is related to sea shells. However, I don’t recall the waterfront beach or the creeks of Edmonds having any noticeable or unusual shells, and question that the Shell Creek name came from that source.
