Mexico Ruling on U.S. Potatoes Pt 3 - AG INFORMATION NETWORK OF THE WEST

Mexico Ruling on U.S. Potatoes Pt 3 Tuesday May 4th, 2021 I’m Bob Larson. The Mexican Supreme Court ruled last week that its government does have the authority to allow the import of U.S. fresh potatoes. Now, according to National Potato Council CEO Kam Quarles, the two governments will try and work out the details … QUARLES … “Clearly, there’s going to be political influence at play, but, I mean, I think it’s pretty obvious that Secretary Vilsack, U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Tai, they’re really engaged in this issue. They know it very well and I think they’re going to want to get a win here because this issue is, even though it’s been kind of embroiled in a ton of politics, it’s easy to solve.”

Mexico Ruling on U.S. Potatoes Pt 2 - AG INFORMATION NETWORK OF THE WEST

Mexico Ruling on U.S. Potatoes Pt 2 Monday May 3rd, 2021 I’m Bob Larson. Fresh U.S. potatoes could soon be headed to Mexico. This after Mexico’s Supreme Court’s ruling last week that gives its government the authority to allow the import of U.S. spuds, following obligations under the USMCA. National Potato Council CEO, Kam Quarles says Mexico’s grower groups have pushed hard against U.S. potatoes … QUARLES … “Countries can’t say, we’re going to shut of trade when competition gets too inconvenient. The point is that you want to provide consumers with a choice. You want to have that healthy competition in a variety of different goods.”
