Sumner High School among St. Louis schools considered for closing

Carnahan will go back to being a middle school. Historic Sumner High School had also been recommended for closure, but the board has postponed that decision until March.
Sumner alum and former schools superintendent Dr. John Wright was asked how one school could produce so much talent, including Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, Arthur Ashe, comedian Dick Gregory, Billy Davis, Jr. and Grace Bumbry.
“Because of segregation,” said Wright. “Everyone who lived west of Grand Avenue after they got Vashon attended Sumner.”
Wright put on his school colors and dusted off his 1957 yearbook. He said during segregation, African-American youngsters who lived in St. Louis County could apply to come to high school in St. Louis or go to Douglas in Webster Groves. ....

On superintendent's recommendation, St. Louis School Board postpones vote on closing 11 schools

The St. Louis Public Schools Board Tuesday night postponed a vote Tuesday night on whether to close 11 schools next year. The Board followed the recommendation of  Superintendent Kelvin Adams’ recommendation to wait 30 days for additional feedback and brainstorming.
The Board met at Clyde C. Miller Academy, where members voted 6-1 to move the vote about closures to their Jan. 12 meeting. Board President Dorothy Rhode-Collins, was the sole vote against postponement. The public was able to watch the meeting on YouTube, as is the practice during the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Stakeholders express concerns as SLPS board prepares to vote on school closures


Disbelief, sad, heartbroken, inequitable, disgusted, unsure, concerned, and angry.
Those were all one-word responses given during a virtual meeting Monday night of approximately 100 people to discuss actions that activists and others feel need to be taken after Superintendent Kelvin Adams recommended the closure 11 St. Louis public schools. Seven of those schools are located north of Delmar Boulevard.
WePower, which hosted the meeting is an organization that works to engage communities for social change by providing education and other resources for activists, entrepreneurs and change makers. The organization’s school campaign “What’s Next SLPS?” calls on St. Louis Public Schools to consider closing schools differently and asked the question: “What would school closures look like if SLPS partnered with the communities most impacted by them? ....
