Plans for drug decriminalization in Vancouver could do more harm than good, coalition claims

VANCOUVER
Advocates are calling on the federal government and the City of Vancouver to halt the march toward possible drug decriminalization in the city, saying the process excludes users and demands a do-over.
In a letter to federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu and the Vancouver and British Columbia working groups on decriminalization, a coalition of 15 organizations said the current proposal must be scrapped immediately or risks reproducing the harms of prohibition.
“We cannot abide by the phony Vancouver Model of decriminalization and refuse to be tokenized in petty political bids,” reads the letter from groups representing users.
“We want decriminalization - but on our terms, not the terms of the police and politicians.” ....

Decision to remove cops from schools frustrates supporters and critics

Article content
Parents and advocates both for and against having police liaison officers in schools are upset about the Vancouver School Board’s recent decision to discontinue the long-running program.
The cancellation comes 10 months after students, families and community advocates began calling for an end to the program that places a Vancouver Police Department liaison officer in each of the district’s high schools. Officers deliver safety and crime prevention lessons, coach teams, counsel students, escort field trips, and more.

COVID-19: RCMP union, legal advocates and First Nations groups raises concerns over B.C. travel restrictions

Article content
VICTORIA The union representing B.C.’s 6,500 RCMP officers says it has “grave concerns” about the new COVID-19 travel restrictions coming into force on Friday, measures which it said could erode trust with racialized communities and put officers at increased risk of catching the virus.
And 11 legal and First Nations advocacy groups sent a joint letter to the province Wednesday raising alarm bells about the “over-broad and unconstitutional expansion of police powers” that will disproportionately affect Black, Indigenous and other racialized communities.
