CSO Presents Romantic Concerts Thursday And Friday

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera will mark Valentine’s Day with two brand new, one-night only programs. Part of the First Horizon Foundation Instrumental Series, Romantic Strings and Romantic Winds will feature CSO ensembles in intimate performances at Brainerd Baptist Church on Thursday and Friday, playing a wide variety of both classical and modern works from across the globe.
The CSO String Quintet will perform Romantic Strings on Thursday at 7 p.m., featuring romantic classical pieces, opera excerpts, and pop hits from Dolly Parton, Diane Warren, and more. “The program will also feature a mini-set of music from and about Tennessee that pays tribute to some of the most prominent musicians in our state and provides a dose of hometown sentimentality,” says Megan Chisom, CSO principal viola. ....

Artists Work Grant Program: First Recipients Announced

ArtsBuild, Public Art Chattanooga and the Southeast Tennessee Development District announce the recipients of the first round of the Artists Work Grant program. The Artists Work Grant program, established in October 2020, provides funding to individual artists, artist studios and non-profit arts organizations to produce artworks for public spaces in Chattanooga. Funding for the program is provided by the city of Chattanooga, Lyndhurst Foundation, Benwood Foundation and the Footprint Foundation.
The new grant program received a high volume of applications in the first round, with a diverse range of proposals. A total of $104,700 was awarded to fund eight projects in the following two grant categories: ....

The next installment of the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s First Horizon Foundation Instrumental Series will be a digital presentation of Dvorák and Ravel, featuring chamber ensembles performing Ravel s lush String Quartet in F Major, the exciting opening movement of Dvorák s String Quintet No. 2, and the Adagio of Elgar s Quintet in A minor, featuring CSO Principal Keyboard Alan Nichols on piano.
To ensure the safety of musicians and audience members in the face of rising COVID-19 cases in the community, the organization’s previously scheduled live performances of Appalachian Spring for Jan. 23-25 have been cancelled. ....

Pianos may have somewhat gone out of vogue with today s endless supply of other diversions, but Robert Sims still stays busy keeping the ivories in tune all over the city.
Mr. Sims said when he started out in the tuning business in 1993 there were 12 local piano firms. Now there is only Summitt Pianos on Hixson Pike.
The number of full time piano tuners is down too. There are about seven of us who do 90 percent of the business, he said.
Mr. Sims says, It s a worldwide trend with fewer and fewer people taking lessons and playing the piano. There s a wide gamut of other forms of entertainment nowadays. ....

The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera will continue the First Horizon Foundation Instrumental Series with Holiday Brass on Friday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 20, at 4 p.m. at Collegedale Commons.
The program will highlight the CSO Brass and Percussion ensembles on more than a dozen holiday favorites, including Joy to the World, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, and more.
