Despite massive popular support, Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi faced forces too difficult to manage. These need to be understood in the aftermath of the military coup. A State Administrative Council of 11 including Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (Tatmadaw) Aung Min Hlaing now possesses full power over the state. Aung San Suu Kyi is facing a long trial, the NLD is being dismantled, the election commission dismissed, and her National Reconciliation and Peace Centre dissolved.
In November 2020, the ultra-nationalist monk Wirathu turned himself in and is now in Insein Prison waiting for his case of sedition to begin. Recent events may have raised his prospects for release. The Coup in Myanmar: An Opportunity for Buddhist Nationalists?


These regimes displayed an ambivalent attitude to the country’s main religion, Buddhism – Buddhist movements, which were on the whole in opposition to military rule, were severely repressed. At the same time the military drew a significant level of legitimacy from nationalism, which in Myanmar is intrinsically linked to Buddhism.
As scholars ofinternational relations who examine social movements, identity formation and conflict, we have studied the evolution and growth of Buddhist nationalism in Myanmar. While these groups might not be reliable allies for the military, they are a powerful force with a large grassroots base.

The passage of legislation in some states to apparently protect women belonging to the majority community, also known as laws to prevent ‘love jihad’, has evoked concerns regarding the assault on individual constitutional rights and privacy, particularly the impact on women. The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet had cleared the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020, whereas on December 29, the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet approved the Freedom of Religion Bill, 2020, as an ordinance.
These developments fit into the regional pattern of attempts in an environment of paranoia about demographic change and patriarchy.
In Buddhist-majority Myanmar, the parliament adopted four laws in 2015 the Monogamy Law, Religious Conversion Law and Interfaith Marriage Law, and Population Control Law. In 2012, a case of sexual violence and murder of a Rakhine Buddhist woman sparked communal violence in Sitwe, central Rakhine, ....
