Contractors seek two-week extension to hedge-cutting dates

The Association of Farm and Forestry Contractors in Ireland (FCI) has called for a two-week extension of hedge-cutting dates, due to ongoing wet conditions.
The most recent open period for hedge-cutting began last September and is due to close again on 1 March.
The FCI has asked that the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to extend the closing date by 16 days to 17 March.

FCI national chair John Hughes said: “This high level of rainfall that has resulted in poor conditions in many fields has severely impacted on the ability of farm contractors who provide hedge management services to fulfil their annual hedge management work schedules for their client farmers. ....

The effect of compaction on soil structure cannot be underestimated.
Planning for straw supply and demand will be more important than ever this year, as farmers are expected to have to declare if and what area of straw they intend to chop when applying for their basic payment.
It is no longer as simple as turning on the chopper when you discover that demand and prices are low and buyers can no longer wait for prices to settle.
Farmers will need to have some idea of the straw their regular customers will need ahead of the BPS deadline, so both livestock and tillage farmers should commit to some form of numbers or acres by May. ....

Contractors seek baling compensation in proposed straw chopping scheme
The Association of Farm and Forestry Contractors in Ireland (FCI) has called on Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue to take account of the “huge concerns” it has with the proposed straw chopping scheme.
In a statement this morning (Thursday, January 28), the contractor organisation stressed that such a scheme will have a “significant negative impact” on the incomes of farm contractors who provide straw baling services, particularly in large areas of the south and east of Ireland.
The FCI told the minister in a letter this week that these farm contractors have made continuous large private financial investments in the purchase of high output and efficient baling and straw handling machinery over more than a decade. ....
